When most people think of a brand they usually think about dance shoes, their favorite clothing lines, appliances, stores, etc.
But what about people? Believe it or not people are brands. Take Oprah for example…
What are the top three things you think of when you hear her name?
These are the things for which she is known.
Famous or not, YOU are a brand.
And your brand has to do with the way your customers, friends, students, co workers or family think about you when they hear your name.
Your specific traits are what make you different from other people. This is called ‘differentiating yourself.’
When branding yourself you have to know what you want, what you value, and what you stand for. Your values play a major part in your wants and your needs.
If a point of view is in contrast to your values, you’re likely to reject it. This makes knowing what you want a lot easier.
Once you know what you want, building your personal brand becomes easier. Ask yourself what is the one factor that is going to make you stand out from the crowd? What do you want to be known for?
Here are some questions to get you started :
- What do I do well?
- What makes me unique?
- How am I different from my peers?
- What do people consistently say about me?
- Is this what I want them to say about me?
- What do I want to promote about myself?
- What do I enjoy doing and would do for free?
- What do I want to be known for?
- What legacy do I want to leave?
- What do I value?
Answering these questions is the way to develop the foundation of your personal brand.
And having a solid foundation is what helps you to get up in the morning and gives your life purpose and meaning.
It’s not enough to have talent and to work hard. Today, branding yourself, on and offline, is one of the best ways to get ahead in your industry.
With a solid foundation you’re well on your way to building a fulfilling and profitable career.
